666 Park Avenue Pilot Episode Preview

Based on Gabriella Pierce's novel of the same name, ABC is rolling out the New York City drama 666 Park Avenue this fall.

With a star-studded cast including network grads Terry O'Quinn (Lost), Vanessa Williams (Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty), Rachael Taylor (Charlie's Angels, Grey's Anatomy) and Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters), the series comes from David Wilcox, who is well-versed in the complexities of the supernatural space with stints on Fringe and Life on Mars.

The Hollywood Reporter screened the pilot for the drama and as part of our Fall Preview 2012 have five things to know about the series before its fall launch.

1. The show still has the same supernatural elements from Pierce's book, but the characters and aspects of the broad concept have been modified for the small screen. In the book, the wealthy Malcolm Doran proposes to architect Jane Boyle, who moves to New York (from Paris of all places) to start their new life together. And when she meets Malcolm's family, things get interesting and Jane finds herself with magical abilities. In the TV version, 666 Park Avenue follows a young couple (Annable and Taylor) who move into the historical Drake building (it had been featured in Architectural Digest, says Jane) as resident managers, but little do they know, its residents may be possessed by an external force.

2. "They're never going to let you go." At first, things at the Drake are rosy but of course, Jane and Henry slowly start to peel away the layers behind the layers. There's a professional violinist who tries to leave the apartment building -- and never makes it out, instead getting sucked into the building. (Question is: Where did he go?) There's another, John Barlow, who gets sucked into a wall. While the employees and the residents (some of them with odd fetishes, like peering into the bedroom of a naked woman living next door). So when Jane discovers a mysterious room down in the lowly basement, it's just the tip of the iceberg.

3. There's a thief in the building. A young woman who lives in the building, Nona (Samantha Logan), is the first to warn Jane. The interesting thing about this thief is that s/he isn't exactly stealing the most expensive things. Isntead, they're eyeing odd trinkets, including a necklace that seems to have everyone at the Drake gushing over it.

4. Though 666 Park Avenue can be categorized as a supernatural drama, it covers the gamut. There's the historical elements, a high-stakes (and series-long) mystery, horror, high society conflicts, soap DNA and pure character drama.

5. ABC is banking on female-skewing programs for its three-hour Sunday lineup with 666 Park Avenue filling the 10 p.m. slot previously held by the likes of Brothers & Sisters, GCB and Pan Am. On paper, the bet may pay off for the network. Once Upon a Time opens the evening at 8 p.m. (fairy tales and magic), followed by the soapy Revenge and 666 Park Avenue (with aspects of both mixed in) closing out the night.

666 Park Avenue will air Sundays at 10 p.m. this fall.
