Only 2 Pinoy Films Made it to P100-Million Mark in Mid-2012
It is already July but only two local movies made more than P100 million at the box office according to the latest data released by Box Office Mojo website.
The John Lloyd Cruz - Angel Locsin starrer "Unofficially Yours" is still the highest-grossing Filipino movie of the year, taking in an estimated P154.8 million. The said Star Cinema produced movie is also currently ranks No. 2 for the year behind "The Avengers," which has become the all-time top-grossing film in the Philippines raking more than P600 million during its run.
However, "The Amazing Spider-Man," which opened only last Friday, will likely topple "Unofficially Yours" from the No. 2 spot. The superhero reboot grossed an estimated P149 million after only three days in theaters, Box Office Mojo said on Wednesday.
The comedy-horror movie "Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme," starring Eugene Domingo, also made more than P100 million with a three-week take of P116,869,846. This Star Cinema ang Spring Films co-produced movie is currently at No. 8 for the year.
At No. 3 for the year is Viva Films' "Moron 5 and the Crying Lady," earning P63.6 million, followed by Star Cinema's "Born to Love You" with P52 million and Star Cinema's "Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang" with P50.6 million.
Star Cinema's "Every Breath U Take" took an estimated P48.4 million, while Regal Films' "The Mommy Returns" grossed P29.3 million.
The other local films released in the first half are: Star Cinema's "A Mother's Story" and "My Cactus Heart," GMA Films' "Boy Pick-Up: The Movie" and "My Kontrabida Girl" and Cesar Montano's "Hitman."
From January to June this year, only 10 films have crossed the P100-million mark, including international hits like "The Hunger Games," as well as U.S. flops like "Battlefield."
